Your Podcast Analytics Are Lying to You

Downloads are easy to look at. They're right there on your dashboard, a clean number that goes up or down and feels like it's telling you something important.

It's mostly not.

A download means someone clicked. It means your title or cover art caught their attention for a moment.

It says nothing about whether they stayed, whether they trusted you, whether they're coming back, or whether they're one episode away from reaching out.

The metric that actually tells you whether your show is building trust is completion rate. How long are people staying? Are they finishing your episodes?

If they are, that's evidence of trust in real time. If they're dropping off in the first two minutes consistently, that's a signal worth investigating regardless of how healthy your total download numbers look.

But the most honest metric of all isn't on any dashboard. It's whether anyone is reaching out.

Not clicking, not completing, but treating you like someone they have a real relationship with. An email that says I've been listening for months and I finally feel ready to reach out. A comment on a LinkedIn post that goes deeper than a thumbs up. A referral from a listener who told someone else about your show.

Those are the signals of trust. And they're almost entirely absent from the analytics tabs that most podcasters stare at every week.

Measure what matters. Build what builds trust. The downloads will eventually follow.
